Sifan Hassan to Race Berlin Half Marathon Following 5K World Record in Monaco

By Adam Kopet

Sifan Hassan will stick to the roads this spring following her 5K road world record in Monaco. She is scheduled to race April 7 at the Berlin Half Marathon.

Hassan is already the European record holder for the half marathon. She ran 1:05:15 last year to win the Copenhagen Half Marathon at the conclusion of a successful track season that saw her run 4:14.71 for the mile and 14:22.34 for 5,000 meters. The latter was also a European record.

In 2019, Hassan has only run one race, but she made it count. Competing in the Herculis 5K in Monaco earlier this month, she ran 14:44 to set a world record. The road 5K is a newly record eligible event.

With the IAAF World Outdoor Championships taking place in September and October this year, Hassan has the time to focus on the roads this spring. The half marathon will provide good endurance conditioning as she plans to focus on the 5,000 and 10,000 meters when she moves to the track this year.

Hassan is a member of the Nike Oregon Project. She competes for The Netherlands.

Leading the men's race in Berlin is defending champion Eric Kiptanui. He won last year's race in 58:42, which, at the time, equaled the world lead.

Kiptanui does not have a world record to his name in 2019, like Hassan does, but he did win the Barcelona Half Marathon earlier this year. He won a close race in 1:01:04.
